Yes, you can apply even if your business isn’t officially registered yet. However, we strongly recommend familiarizing yourself with the basic requirements for operating legally in NYC to make your participation easier. This includes:
– choosing a business structure (Sole Proprietor, LLC, etc.);
– reviewing the NYC Health Code (especially Article 81);
– understanding what licenses or permits may be required;
– knowing the basics of a Food Control Plan or self-inspection process;
– being ready to ensure food safety, traceability, and honest labeling.
Yes, you can. Our program is completely independent and not affiliated with NYC Health Department grading. You are welcome to become a member and begin the A+ VIP process at any time.
Yes, absolutely. We encourage home-based food businesses to apply. This is your chance to show your customers that you are committed to the highest standards,
even if you’re operating under the home processor exemption and not eligible to license your kitchen.
Yes, you can. Mobile food vendors — including food trucks, pushcarts, catering tents, and market stalls — are all welcome to apply for the A+ VIP program. We support all types of food businesses.

Unfortunately, no. The certificate remains the property of the New York Food Business Association. Since the A+ VIP program is an ongoing process — not a one-time test — we require that any certificate be returned if membership ends.
Displaying the certificate or any copy of it after your membership has ended constitutes a serious breach of our Terms and Conditions and may result in legal action.

These cases are extremely rare. If you’re operating responsibly like most New York businesses, you will never face this issue
It depends on many factors. Under normal circumstances, you may expect a short follow-up within 1–2 years. It will not take much of your time, and your assigned coach will continue to support you until any issues are resolved.
In the case of significant updates to food safety laws — whether citywide or federal — NYFBA reserves the right to schedule more frequent assessments to help A+ VIP businesses stay aligned with the highest standards.
